High Fructose Corn Syrup

It is safe for you to assume that I am 100% against consuming High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) – which is damn difficult considering it has infested everything from baby formula to wheat bread and found in something that – in my opinion – should be banned, along with cigarettes … soft drinks.

But does High Fructose Corn Syrup just cause physical health problems? In a recent article from Holistic Primary Care: News for Health & Healing titled, “Children of the Corn (Syrup)” it seems that it can cause psychological problems, as well.

High school kids who drink more than 5 cans of soft drinks per week are 15% more likely than their non-soda’d counterparts to act violently, according to a new study from Harvard School of Public Health.

Researchers surveyed 1,878 inner-city Boston public school kids, and found an unequivocal correlation between self-reported soft-drinking and aggression. Among those who drank 14 cans/week—that’s roughly one third of the kids—58% had histories of violence toward peers, and an alarming 43% carried guns or knives. For those who drank 1 or less, the numbers were 35% and 23%—still disturbingly high, when you think about it.

“Dose-Dependent” Relationship

Investigator David Hemenway says the correlation between soft drinks and violence was “dose dependent,” and similar in magnitude to correlations between teen alcohol use and violence. The data were published earlier this week in the online edition of the British journal, Injury Prevention.

Is it the sugar (corn syrup) or the caffeine? Dr. Hemenway said nobody really knows. He stressed that correlation does not prove causation, though it does raise suspicion.

It also raises the specter of the “Twinkie Defense”—a weird judicial episode in which a killer pleaded—somewhat successfully–that his murderous behavior was triggered by junk food. HPC wonders whether it’ll also give the gun lobby some new ammo: “Guns don’t kill people, Soft Drinks do!”

Whether or not soda makes kids go ballistic, it’ll probably help make ‘em fat and sick. Princeton researchers showed that high-fructose corn syrup—the stuff Corn Refiners Association now wants us to call “corn sugar”—is significantly more metabolically detrimental than plain white sugar. Continue Reading …

Common Digestive Problems

The two most common digestive complaints seem to be heartburn and constipation. Most people have had one or both on occasions, but most people only see a doctor when their symptoms are either acute or chronic, so we have no idea how many people suffer from these conditions occasionally.

Heartburn – a burning feeling in the stomach. It can be caused by things you eat or drink or by other physical problems, such as hiatal hernias, allergies or deficiencies of Hydrochloric acid (HCL) or enzymes. It may also be a response to stress. What seems like heartburn may be a symptom of a heart problem instead of a digestive problem. If it continues, you should consult your qualified healthcare practitioner. When the problem comes now and then, it is suggested that you:

Keep track of what you eat and drink to see if you find a pattern.

Eat slowly and chew food well.

Avoid fried, fatty, spicy, or processed foods.

Begin to supply you’re your digestive system with friendly bacteria – probiotics.

Constipation – infrequent, irregular elimination of waste materials. The stool becomes packed and hard, making passage difficult. In many cases, it is caused by inadequate intake of fiber and liquids. Lifestyle Induced Dysbiosis Syndrome (L.I.D.S.) is often a contributing factor because friendly bacteria are important in the way fiber is incorporated into other waste materials. The lack of friendly intestinal bacteria is a side effect of medications, such as antibiotics, pain killer, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDS), antifungals, etc… These bacteria need to be replaced regularly with safe and effective probiotics.

Health advisors suggest increasing the fiber in your diet along with makings sure to keep properly hydrated. If you are eating a diet high in whole grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables, you will have much more fiber in your diet than most people do, yet you may still need to supplement with fiber such as nogales, psyllium, guar gum, wheat bran, oat bran or rice bran.

Drinking aloe vera juice in the morning and evening, and adding safe and effective probiotic supplements, such as The Geneflora Family of Probiotics, can be very beneficial. Products are also available which include combinations of fiber with herbs or other botanicals. Investigate, too, the programs for cleansing and detoxing your body, which is particularly important if digestive problems have been part of your life for more than a few weeks.

A Key to Health

Our bodies are made up of several systems, all relatively tamper-proof-except for the digestive system. The digestive system is not as well protected as the other systems, and we abuse it unmercifully.

We live in a fast-paced world, and we believe that our survival depends upon passing our competition in the rat race. Being fully involved in the rat race this way does not allow us to take time to breathe deeply, sleep very long, or chew our food. Survival in the rat race does not have a great deal to do with survival as people. Yet, many people race through life, sacrificing health and vitality for status and stock options as if these were the qualities of survival.

We know we must eat to soothe the gnawing in our midsections, so we gobble junk food on our way to appointments or grab anything that is handy and requires no effort. We chew just enough so that we can swallow and wash it down with large quantities of liquids full of caffeine, sugar or both. Then we dash into the store to buy “purple pills” to quiet our churning digestive systems until after the board meeting or important presentations are over for the day. After a day like that, you feel as if you have survived, but have no energy left for laughter.

Your body, your mind, and your soul were not designed for this type of survival. They were designed for health and vitality, for whole food and sound sleep, and for love and laughter. At a basic level, survival and health depend upon food that is fully digested. But as long as nothing really bad comes up, you will probably ignore your basic natural design, and go on filling your digestive system the easiest possible way instead of thinking of health.

Unfortunately, when you treat your digestive system badly, it cannot do its job of providing nourishment and energy to all of the other systems in your body. Things go wrong, with results ranging from annoying to disastrous. It begins with indigestion, heartburn, and constipation. Later you may find yourself dealing with Diabetes, Allergies, Hypertension, Osteoporosis, Heart Disease, Asthma, Kidney Failure, and Obesity, or a host of other physical problems that begin with faulty digestion.

Steps to a Healthy Digestive System

Eat a diet that is high in complex carbohydrates, high in fiber, low in fat, and has a moderate amount of protein. This means: Eating whole grains, vegetables and fruits lean meats, poultry or fish.

Cut WAY down or avoid refined sugar, white flour, fried foods and most foods and beverages that are processed or have chemical additives.

Eat slowly and chew food well. Digestion will not proceed as it should if large chunks of food are swallowed. Many digestive problems begin in the mouth.

Exercise regularly and stretch often during the day to help maintain healthy digestion.

Avoid stress at mealtime. Stress stops or slows the digestive process and disrupts the body’s natural rhythms. Learn to cut stress in your life. Stress is a major cause of digestive problems.

Use supplemental fiber, as needed to speed waste materials through the colon. Dieticians recommend 20-40 grams of fiber a day.

Supplement as needed to keep digestive chemicals at adequate levels. Most older people have decreasing amounts of digestive enzymes and gastric acid.

Supplement with safe and effective probiotics – live friendly bacteria that are hardy enough to pass through the stomach acids and other digestive chemicals. The most dependable probiotic is Geneflora for adults and KiddiFlora for children and adults who do not like to swallow pills or capsules. And don’t forget your furry family members to and give them Geneflora for Pets.

Probiotics for Everyone

Everyone who is more than a few hours old needs beneficial microflora. “Friendly bacteria” are like food, we need them for good health as long as we live. We will not die without these intestinal flora bacteria, as we would without food, but we will not be healthy. And we will be susceptible to the many specific disorders that can afflict the body. Many older people do not have enough beneficial intestinal flora bacteria in their intestines and they have more putrefactive bacteria than there are in younger people. Could this lack of friendly microflora be a reason many older people are in poor health?

Babies are born with no intestinal flora bacteria which changes as soon as they have their first taste of milk. Mother’s milk is rich in microflora, and most of the bacteria—over 90%–are Bifidobacterium infantis. Some authors suggest that the B. infantis bacteria in mother’s milk are an important part of the strong immune function passed from mother to infants.

Formula fed babies have more of a variety of types of bacteria – more like all babies have when they are weaned. Whether breast-fed or formula-fed, by the time the baby is a week old, it’s tiny intestines are host to a thriving microflora garden. If that garden stays balanced, the chances are that, when the baby is fifty years old, he will say, “I’ve never been sick in my life.”

Keeping a healthy balance of intestinal flora bacteria depends upon a lifestyle and a diet that includes foods or food products with beneficial flora. Since very few of us make fresh yogurt daily or drink unprocessed buttermilk daily, and nearly all of us have lifestyles that encourage dysbiosis, most of us need the food products with beneficial flora — Probiotics.

Who Needs Probiotics?

Probiotics are products that are made up of live “friendly bacteria.” If your lifestyle includes any of the following, probiotics will make a big difference in your life:

Probiotics are necessary for anyone who:

Eats processed food.

Eats food with chemical additives.

Lives where there are pollutants in the air, water, or environment.

Drinks chlorinated water.

Has taken antibiotics, antifungals, anti-inflammatories.

Has digestive problems.

Has food allergies or sensitivities.

Has high stress levels.

So it is safe to say that just about every single person needs a probiotic.

“Let Food Be Thy Medicine.” – Hippocrates

I just finished watch a movie that is highly recommended that everyone watch, Forks Over Knives.

I URGE you to take 2 minutes and watch the trailer and then decide for yourself.

Click here to view the embedded video.

As a quick overview, the proponents suggest you eat, strictly, a Whole-Food, Plant-Based Diet – that means no meat and no dairy. As with most things, I appreciate what the research shows – the benefits of halting and in some cases reversing diseases – but would never recommend going to one extreme or the other. Yes, I do believe there are some instances where one must give up certain luxuries ( meat and cheese ) due to earlier lifestyle choices which may have knocked their body out of balance and has now become a matter of life or death, but in most cases, I will always stick with moderation being the key.

“The Doctor of the Future Will No Longer Treat the Human Frame with Drugs, But Rather Will Cure and Prevent Disease with Nutrition.” – Thomas Edison

“He That Takes Medicine and Neglects Diet, Wastes the Time of His Doctor.” – Ancient Chinese Proverb

However, one of the most eye-opening parts was in regards to the My Pyramid dietary guidelines, if followed would allow a teenager to eat:

A bowl of Lucky Charms with Low-fat Milk and a glass of orange juice from concentrate for breakfast; Cheese-flavored crackers (Cheez-It) for a morning snack; A cheeseburger on a whole-grain bun with French fries and a can of Coke for lunch; Chocolate pudding and grapes for an afternoon snack; and chicken nuggets with a biscuit, green beans from a can for dinner with low-fat ice cream for dessert.

THIS IS NUTRITIOUS? Sadly, this is not too far off from a relatively standard American diet – and then we wonder why obesity, type 2 diabetes and other health issues are becoming so prevalent in our society.

“You see, there’s no money in healthy people and there’s no money in dead people. The money is in the middle – people who are alive, sort of – but with one or more chronic condition.” – Bill Maher

“One-quarter of what you eat keeps you alive. The other three-quarters keeps your doctor alive.” – Ancient Egyptian Proverb

“Clearly, the Western diet is taking its toll. This should serve as a wake-up call. We have a growing problem, and the ones who are growing … are us!” – Katie Couric

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.

When there’s a job to do, give it your undivided attention.

Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

When it’s in your best interest, practice obedience.

Live in the moment. The time to enjoy is now.

Let others know when they’ve invaded your territory.

Take naps often and stretch before rising.

Run, romp and play daily.

Don’t hold a grudge – it hurts you more than the one who wronged you.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

Eat with gusto and enthusiasm.

Be loyal.

Never pretend to be something you’re not.

If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.

Thrive on attention and let people touch you.

On hot days, drink lots of water and lay under a shady tree.

When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

No matter how often you’re scolded, don’t buy into the guilt thing or pout. Run right back and make friends.

Bond with your pack – cultivate friendships.

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

If you can’t eat it or play with it – pee on it and walk away!

While on a walk through the local park today, peacefully enjoying the leaves crunching under my feet and the light mist from the early morning fog on my face, I was suddenly shaken out of my hypnotic trance by the sound of a woman’s voice screeching through, what was, the quiet solitude. Noticing that she wasn’t in danger or in pain, I became very annoyed and headed in her direction to firmly give her a piece of my mind.

Why?

Because she was yelling at her dog who seemed to be ignoring her commands – and why wouldn’t he? Would YOU like to have YOUR leash roughly yanked while being yelled at by someone? Unfortunately, this pup HAS to respond nicely, because he relies on this brute of a woman for food and, judging by her rotund size, very little exercise. Now the worst part about this is that this woman had one of her own offspring standing nearby – watching and giggling …

** Warning **

The following may be considered tactless and downright offensive.

As I headed towards the two psychopaths, it was apparent that this “pup” was actually older and seemed to have no spirit – no fight – left in him. My heart crumbled and the anger welled up:

“Hey Lady, what’s your problem?” I shouted. Disdainfully, she looked over her shoulder at me, then turned and continued to verbally and physically assault the dog. Approaching her, I continued, “How would you like it if I put a leash around your kid’s neck and yanked her around while yelling at her in Croatian?” THAT got her attention! Turning to face me directly, her facial expression changed from horrified to rage – her moon-face turning from pasty white to blood red.

“Why don’t you mind your own business?” she barked.

“I AM! Animals ARE my business!” I retorted, mimicking her tone.

Obviously startled, she opened her mouth to speak, but interrupting her before she could, I continued, “Is THIS the kind of behavior you want your kid to emulate? Beating and berating a defenseless animal?”

“This beast should have been put down long ago!” she snapped.

Now the child began to cry.

Now MY blood was beginning to boiling and I was in no mood to back off – especially with people who think animals are “disposable.”

Signaling to her kid, the flurry began “Hey, I have no tolerance for crying kids, why don’t you have her put down?” Turning my attention directly at Mamma Moose and continued, “Better yet, we have dogs spayed and neutered without THEIR consent, maybe YOUR type needs to have their tubes tied so that we don’t have an over-population of useless rugrats using up our valuable resources! What? All of a sudden a dog or cat gets sick or has some behavior that you think is unacceptable and you’re ready to kill the dog or cat simply because they can’t tell you why they’re behaving the way they are and that they don’t want to die?

This kid (pointing at the kid) would probably get her jollies lighting a firecracker in a cat’s butt and she could outright say she did it because she thought it would be funny!” Pointing at the kid, the relentless attack went on, “How many times has she kept you up at night crying? Or made a mess that you had to clean up? Or threw a temper-tantrum because you said ‘no’ to her? Did you ever think that maybe you should put her down? WAIT! Don’t answer that, I don’t even want to imagine your response!”

Noticing the glazed look on her face, I stopped and, with a frustrated, “WELL?!?” waited for her response ……..

With a contemptuous, “Go F**k Yourself!” she turned, grabbed her crying kid’s hand and yanked the poor pup in the other direction – actually, I found that to be an appropriate response and chuckled to myself.

As a side note – and this is not an excuse – I have seen this woman many times in the park and her behavior towards her dog is, more times than not, abhorrent. So should she have been taken to task in front of her kid? Some would say no, some would say yes – SOME would be more shocked by her behavior and the language she used in front of her kid.

I am not saying what I did was right – I am not saying what I did was wrong. I am saying that I was simply a voice for an animal that doesn’t speak our language and yet is forced to live in our world and live by our terms – whatever those may be.

The Epidemic of Our Times

Lifestyle Induced Dysbiosis Syndrome (L.I.D.S.) is a health problem that we recognized and named in 1999. Over time, this health problem has silently coursed its way into and through society causing people and animals to suffer in ever-increasing proportions. Nothing was done about this health problem and now it seems that Lifestyle Induced Dysbiosis Syndrome has reached to an epidemic level.

What is Lifestyle Induced Dysbiosis Syndrome (L.I.D.S.)?

Let’s break it down: Lifestyle is the way of life that is typical of a person, group or culture. Induced is to cause or bring about a physical condition. Dysbiosis is an imbalance of harmful versus friendly bacteria (gut microflora) in the intestines. Syndrome is a group of symptoms that are characteristic of a specific disease.

To put it one way, Lifestyle Induced Dysbiosis Syndrome (L.I.D.S.) is a set of symptoms that are triggered when the number of beneficial bacteria in the intestines (gut microflora) decrease causing an imbalance of good and bad bacteria in the gut. This imbalance of the gut microflora first sets off an imbalance in the digestive system, which affects the homeostasis in every system in the body. A system out of balance is a system that is not operating at its best.

Symptoms of Lifestyle Induced Dysbiosis Syndrome (L.I.D.S.)

The symptoms can range from something as minor as indigestion to irregular bowel movements (constipation or diarrhea) to something more severe such as diverticulitis and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Other symptoms include, but are not limited to: headaches, slowing of digestion, lactose intolerance, food sensitivities, leaky gut syndrome, weakened immune system, candidiasis – and the list goes on and on.

What Causes Lifestyle Induced Dysbiosis Syndrome ( L.I.D.S.)?

As it is stated, LIDS is “Lifestyle-Induced” meaning that everything that is part of our way of living – from the fast food diets we consume to the prescription and over-the-counter medications we take and especially stress (everything that is making our already stressful lifestyle even more stressful) – is taking its toll on the body and wreaking havoc on the gut microflora.

Is There Relief In Sight?

It’s estimated that about 65% to 80% of the immune system is in the gut so it is important to keep the good microflora at a healthy level. So the first step to helping relieve Lifestyle Induced Dysbiosis Syndrome (L.I.D.S.) is to bring the intestinal flora back to its regular and normal state. Supplementing your diet with effective probiotic formulas is absolutely essential.
